4 Awesome Tips For Glass Ball Photography

Flip The Inverted Image

When you click the image refracted in a glass ball, you find it inverted. It is because the subject/scene is inverted in the ball due to refraction. As you cannot change the laws of Physics, you have to adopt a trick to work with it. You can fix it in post-processing. Some photographers even do not change the inverted photo as it is and keep it in juxtaposition with the original scene. This contrast creates a dramatic effect. If you want to click right-side-up photos directly from the glass ball anyway and avoid the hassle of rotating it in post-processing, then let the reflection of the scene refract in the ball. The reflected image will then get the right side up automatically in the ball, after refraction.

Shoot From The Same Level

If you click the photos of the glass ball from above, the images will be distorted. Also, it will not be possible to experiment with compositions. So, always shoot from the same level as the glass ball. You can place the ball on a high platform or put it on the ground and shoot from close by bending down. Wherever you put the ball in, just be careful that it does not roll off it and get smashed. If possible, have someone keep an eye on it. Make sure that the refraction of the subject or scene is at the center of the ball.

Make Sure The Subject Fills The Ball

It will not look good if the subject seems to be very tiny in the ball. So, you should click the glass ball from very close, so that it appears to cover the glass ball fully. If you do not want to take a close shot, then find some creative ways to avoid this hindrance. Also, you should be aware that the subject is strongly lit. Otherwise, it will cause unwanted reflections when you click the subject filling in the ball.

Choose The Correct Lens

Technically, there is no restriction on using any type of lens in glass ball photography, but experts recommend using a macro lens. It will help you to capture lots of details in the glass ball. Also, you will be able to create a beautiful background blur. You can also use a wide-angle lens to achieve the same. If you are shooting with a telephoto lens, make sure it can focus closely.
