Festivals provide great opportunities for photographers to earn as well as enjoy! You need to tackle the crowd and make sure you don't miss anything important. Storytelling is a crucial part of photography. You need to have a clear idea about what story you're gonna tell. Festival photography can be a real challenge if you are not well-prepared. In this article, the basic preparation tips to shoot a festival are discussed. These tips are applicable for any kind of festival.

How Should You Plan The Upcoming  Festival Photography Shoot

Pack your gears:-

Do not carry too many things otherwise, you will not be able to move swiftly, and might miss a great shot. You need to carefully choose only the essential gears. If you are a beginner, you can opt for the Canon 5D Mark III or Nikon D800 models of DSLR that professional festival photographers use. Selection of lens depends on the kind of festival, time of shooting (day or night), how detailed your photographs would be, etc. You need to carry extra memory cards and batteries always. You should also have the camera charger, lens wipes, and camera cleanser in your backpack. As you will need to shoot in open areas, carry a raincoat and waterproof camera covers too.

Research Well:-

Before shooting, know about the rituals, as well as the story behind them. Try to plan the whole story that you will tell through your photos before shooting. By doing this, you will never miss any important event of the festival, and your photos would be much more detailed. You can refer to the works of other photographers to better understand the emotions and excitement attached to a certain festival. It will help you to portray that in your photos as well. There are many aspects of a festival. It will be good if you choose anyone, and give detailed accounts of it in your photos. For example, Durga Puja in West Bengal is an event of global attraction. Bengalis worship the goddess as their daughter who comes to her paternal home only once a year with her children. The worth of the creative industries of Bengal around this single occasion is more than 30 thousand crores! Common people plan for this occasion from a year before. Everyone puts their loss, grief, and sorrow aside, and enjoys these 5 days from the depth of their hearts. You may decide to cover any one of the 3 aspects of Durga puja- cultural, economic, or social, and shoot accordingly.

Visit the location before:-

You should always visit the location before shooting to plan your position. Consider the possible crowd that will be there too. Make sure you choose a place to stand where people's heads will not obstruct your camera. Also, reach the place much before the event you want to click begins, otherwise, you might lose your desired position. But you should take some photos of the crowd purposefully, to show people's engagement in the festival.
