Surreal photographs break the boundaries of the real world by creating magic. Surreal photography incorporates techniques like forced perspective and double exposure that are less used in other fields of photography. There are many techniques that are yet to explore. You do not need to have a unique subject or location to shoot surreal photographs. All you have to do is to take out something unseen from the mundane things - something that does not appear to be real. There are huge opportunities to experiment with surreal photography with the advent of newer technologies.

5 Super-Easy Ways To Click Outstanding Surreal Photos

Levitate Your Subject

Nothing can look more surreal than the model floating in the air in your photo. For this, turn the manual mode of your camera on. Ask the model to stand on a stool. Take two photos- one is of the model, and the second is of the same settings without the model. In photoshop, keep the image without the model as the bottom layer and the image with the model as the top. Now use the brush tool to remove the stool from the top layer. You will create a perfect awe-inspiring surreal photo of a levitating person.

Play With Colors

Black and white photos are well known for having surreal effects. But you can always experiment with other colors too. Some photographers like to add splashes of vibrant colors here and there in their black and white surreal photos. It gives the images a new dimension. You can also add different color tones to a particular object, or highlight a certain portion of it. You have to use different tools of Photoshop like the Magic Wand, Quick Select tool, Pen tool, Lasso tool, etc. to experiment with colors like this.

Take Underwater Photos

The world underwater is far different from the mundane one on land. It has all the mystery and surprises that a surreal photo requires. You do not need to 'create' the surreal environment, it already offers surreal elements. All you have to do is to capture the surrealism in your photographs.

Blur The Photos

Motion blur is an effective element of surreal photography. You can either blur the images while shooting or do it during post-processing. If you want to shoot blurry images, use a slow shutter speed on a fast-moving object. Lower the aperture to lower the depth of field. If you want to blur the image during editing, you can do that by duplicating the image layer in Photoshop.

Use Blacklight Photography Techniques

Backlight photography creates a dramatic effect in the photo by playing with the chemistry of the subject and the light. Adding multiple dimensions to the photo it makes the photo look unusual. The backlight technique, when used in portraits, expresses the otherwise hidden aspects of the subject. Danilo Batista, a renowned surreal photographer, is known for using backlight in different creative ways in his photos.

Surreal photos are really impressive. It takes skill, experience, and a lot of creativity to produce a surreal image. If you follow the above-mentioned ideas, your work will be much easier.
