Get, set, RUNWAY!

Fashion shows are a big fun experience to have. However, the spontaneity, time, and commitment is a huge investment to take care off.

Runway photography is a sub genre of event photography. To anyone who is interested, make sure to visit some local casual fashion shows before you begin.

This will give you a better chance to understand the inside story of the shows. Talking to the volunteers, models, designers and the first row RSVPs is a great opportunity to understand what these runway shows are all about. Each show follows a particular theme in itself. From clothes being shown to the setup.

Well, without further ado, let us quickly go over some of the best tips required to understand runway photography.

5 best tips on runway photography!

Lens check:

Obviously, duh! If we must tell you, a telephoto lens is the best suited for runway photography. Either pick up a small kit for yourself with a lens that allows you to zoom. Or very well shoot with your phone and slay them shots during the post processing steps!

How to set your camera for runway photography?

In order to pace up with the fast moving environment, you need to use a camera that can be handled manually. Your DSLR is the best choice here.

It allows you to use the best shutter speed, exposure, switch between focal points and make the best out of the low light environment.

Focus on the right areas:

Runway shows are all about the models having a structured impression that is- pretty much everything cold and bold. Stick the settings to focus mode and refocus on your target model. Bonus points, if you can detect the eyes and get some sharp shots!

Multi-angle shot:

Obviously, you cannot move around when the show is on going. But is that stopping you from discovering all the angles? Runway shows often have breaks in between. You should use this time to switch your position.

Best out of the pit:

The pit is the place where all the photographers get to stand to click the pictures. For someone who is new to runway photography, you should study the pioneers. [ The ones who reached the show before you.]

You will figure out their movements, styles and maybe initiate a conversation to get some better insights.

Nevertheless, runway photography is intimidating. And the fact that practice makes you the perfect man in the field, never stop hustling. With this, we come to an end on our tips on runway photography. Do let us know some of your favorite moments from runway photography!
